What is personal telecommunication?

Personal telecommunication is a revolutionary way of providing telecommunication service. Personal telecommunication services are delivered to individuals independently of any line or terminal, allowing them to receive and make calls, irrespective of location or circumstance. Beyond call contactability, personal telecommunication offers individuals unprecedented control over their calls, enabling freedom, security and mobility in their telecommunication.

What is mobility?

There are two types of mobility. Personal and terminal. Personal mobility enables a user to access all of their telecommunication services, and to make and receive calls, on any terminal. Personal mobility is terminal-independent mobility. In contrast, terminal mobility enables users to make and receive calls while they are moving. Terminal mobility is geographically-independent mobility.

Why have personal telecommunication services evolved?

There are a number of key drivers that have influenced, and will continue to influence, the development of personal telecommunication. The development of intelligent network technology and standards has driven the development of the enabling technology for personal telecommunication. The deregulation of national markets, the introduction of number portability, and the need for low cost low/low risk entry strategies has driven the development of a supportive regulatory environment. The increasingly sophisticated needs of customers as well as the need to improve service differentiation has forced operators to look for a new product and marketing mix. Globalisation, high return investment strategies, and channel optimisation has framed the organisational context for advent of personal telecommunication development.

How is UPT different to a mobile phone?

UPT is a complimentary service to a mobile phone. UPT provides personal mobility, and a mobile phone provides terminal mobility. UPT adds value to a mobile phone. Because UPT is not a piece of equipment, it does not have a battery that can run out like a mobile phone, nor can it go out of mobile coverage. Even when a mobile phone is switched off or out of range, the user can receive their calls by directing them to another phone.
